Greetings to you this first day of the 2012 Colorado Legislative Session!

As we prepare for the upcoming session, Colorado Interfaith Voices for Justice
wanted to be sure that you knew our annual event, Faith Advocacy Day, is just
around the corner.

Monday, February 20 from 9 am - 2 pm at the History Colorado center in Denver is
the date.  Registration can be found at the website of our partner organization,
Lutheran Advocacy Ministry - CO (www.lam-co.org).

WE NEED YOU NOW!!!

There are more and more women sleeping on our Denver streets, in very
dangerous situations.

We organizing our community to be part of the solution.

Volunteers from our churches, agencies, and wherever else…who are willing to be
trained to volunteer as overnight coordinators, (maybe once a week),providing
emergency assistance and witness to 20 homeless women. (We encourage
women to apply – men are also welcome to be volunteers)  If you are interested,

We are also looking for:  7 churches or agencies, willing and able to provide a
place, 1 evening a week (7 pm – 7 am), for 20 women to sleep in a safe and warm
environment. If you are interested, want to know more,

(with Denver Road Home and the Delores Project)  Our Savior’s Lutheran Church

Hill United Ministries, Leadership B-fast.  
This year, we are planning another
CHUM B-fast that will be similar to last year’s.  May 10th @ 7:30 AM.   However,
our focus this year will be on the leaders in our CHUM community, who work in the
various areas that we are passionate about.    The CHUM Leadership Team has
outlined our May CHUM Leadership B-Fast as a time to:
Voice our Common Concerns
Witness to what our CHUM ministries do
Recognize special groups and people in our community
Come together in Prayer, and Celebrate and model our presence in our
community with our CHUM members and our Capitol Hill Business Leaders/City
Leaders/ Community Leaders/ elected officials/ heads of Dept in State and City
that affect our CHUM community.

4th Wednesday of the month @ 7 PM Taize at St. Paul You are invited to join
in a contemplative worship, simple song, and prayer in the spirit of Taize. It will be
held at Saint Paul Lutheran Church (1600 Grant Street) at the edge of downtown.
We invite all faiths to join us! Please note that parking is available and free on the
streets surrounding the church after 6pm. Our services are held by candlelight and

The Sunday Meal Program at St. Paul really needs donations.  They serve 150-
200 hot meals to hungry people every Sunday at St. Paul and do it on a shoestring

This year marks DenUM's 30th anniversary! For the past three decades, DenUM
has been helping those in our community who often have nowhere to turn for
support. We offer needed support so that everyone can be housed, fed, safe, and
warm.  As part of our commitment to the community, DenUM has made huge
strides toward becoming greener, and the utility savings from this project will
benefit DenUM clients for the next thirty years!

A brief description of the purpose of the agency:
Sacred Heart House of Denver offers a continuum of services to homeless
mothers with children and single women, who have the desire and commitment to
become self-sufficient.

Possible Volunteer Opportunities.  
Dinner for Residents: Volunteers cook/purchase dinner for the residents of Sacred
Heart House (usually 20 people), bring the food to SHH to reheat it, and share the
meal with the residents.  Volunteers can sign up for any night of the week.  This
can be a one-time project, or a once a month commitment.  Dinner is served at 6 p.
m.  No training necessary.

A brief description of the purpose of your agency:  Metro CareRing (MCR) is a
non-profit organization with a thirty-six year history of working with families and
individuals in financial distress, assisting them with their most basic needs.
Operating one of the largest food pantries in metro Denver, MCR also helps with
referral and information sharing, provides work related items, ID documents and
utility assistance. Additionally, we address hunger, poverty and other difficult
issues through advocacy, direct support and meeting emergency needs.  Please

Advocating for homeless people to become self-sufficient and learn to advocate
for other people who experience poverty.
Possible Volunteer Opportunities.  We need support.  We are asking for a
community advisory board of social service providers and citizens to support
(PLC).  We also need contributions on a consistent basis of religious
organizations and community groups.

In the spirit of the CHUM and CHUN mission statements, the DAG has formed 4
working groups around 1) getting to know your neighbors, 2) supporting local
business, 3) maintaining a diverse housing stock in Cap Hill, 4) engaging in policy
decisions to support our values.

A brief description of the purpose of your agency: CHARG is a small mental health
center offering treatment and other services including a drop-in center for adults
with major mental illness in the Metro Denver Area.  Please call for needs and

CHARG Speakers Bureau. CHARG mental health consumers have put together a
speakers' bureau of folks who are available to talk about mental illness in general, the
CHARG partnership model, and especially, their own personal stories of their experiences

Colorado Housing Investment Fund (CHIF) has speakers available and willing to visit
churches to talk about the CO Housing Investment Fund. Brad Wood, member of CHUM’s
board of representatives and our rep to the CHIF Coalition. His e-mail is

Capitol Hill Family Initiative Collaborative is a localized Denver Dept. of Human Services
program that is able to assist TANF-eligible families residing in Capitol Hill with basic
needs as well as counseling, supervised visitation, truancy issues, mentoring, and other
supports. Collaborative members include CHUM, The Gathering Place, Warren Village,
The Empowerment Project, FreshStart and others. The group is also recruiting foster and

Families First hosts support groups for Parents of Pre-Schoolers, Grandparents and

Newly re-named “10 year plan to end homelessness” is now called “Denver’s Road
Home”. Website:
www.denversroadhome.org.  Calls concerning homeless individuals in
need of assistance can be directed to the following phone number between the hours of 6:
00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.  303.285.5258. Copies of a new brochure entitled, “5 Ways to
Help the Homeless in Denver,” and additional info available on the website and by calling
2-1-1.

Denver Urban Ministries (DenUM) Brown Bag Series: This series of informal educational
opportunities for service providers is free of charge. Participants are encouraged to bring
a lunch and enjoy an hour of conversation and discovery. The series is held the last
Wednesday of each month on the third floor of DenUM.  Interested persons are
encouraged to register, space is limited.  Presentations begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. The
agency doors are locked at 12:40 p.m.  Free parking is available on the streets south of
DenUM. Registration can be made by emailing:
